Countdown to the Netball World Cup 2019

The countdown to the Netball World Cup has begun as the official launch event took place at St. George’s Hall in the heart of Liverpool today.

Liverpool will welcome the event in July 2019, when 16 teams from around the globe will arrive on Merseyside to compete for the distinction of being the best in the world.

ACC Liverpool, located on the world-famous waterfront, will play host to the tournament with matches being played at the Echo Arena.

Chairman of England Netball, Cheryl Danson OBE, Assistant Mayor of Liverpool, Councillor Wendy Simon, Bob Prattey, chief executive of ACC Liverpool and Emma Cowley, UK Sport Major Events Consultant presented Clare Briegal, chief executive officer of the International Netball Federation, with England Netball's successful bid application to host the Netball World Cup 2019 in Liverpool at the ACC

The famous arena has showcased elite netball before - in February 2017, England Roses took on the New Zealand Silver Ferns in a grudge match that saw the visitors claim a 61-37 victory over the battling English side.

England Netball CEO Joanne Adams said: “We have a 10-year plan with Liverpool to make sure that we keep bringing netball back. It’s really important for us to showcase the sport all over the country, and not just in the south.”

Liverpool will host the Netball World Cup in 2019.  The first ever Netball World Cup took place in 1963 in Eastbourne, and it returned to England in 1995 when Birmingham were the hosts.

Clare Briegal, CEO of the International Netball Federation is confident that Liverpool will serve as an excellent host city for the event.

The World Cup will see fans from all over the globe coming to the North-West to cheer on their countries, with visitors from Australia and New Zealand expected to arrive en masse.

The Echo Arena will announce when ticket sales for what promises to be a spectacular tournament in due course.
